The Adjudicator, Professor Julian Farrand QC, is independent of PhonepayPlus, service providers and network operators. He is responsible for adjudicating upon claims for compensation in respect of unauthorised calls to certain live services.

Providers of live entertainment services (currently one-to-one chat, multi-party chat, tarot and other psychic services) are normally required to contribute to a relevant Compensation Fund. In cases of claims for unauthorised use of the telephone (defined as “use without the knowledge or permission of the bill-payer”), the Adjudicator can investigate claims from the public for compensation and direct the Trustees of the Compensation Funds to make payments to claimants.
