If you don't want to receive offers and information from specific companies, the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) can make sure your telephone number is no longer available to them.

Some companies compile databases with telephone numbers and sell them on to marketing organisations. If you don't want to receive offers and information from companies, the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) can make sure your telephone number is no longer contained on these databases.

It's worth knowing that under Government legislation introduced in 1999 it's unlawful to make direct marketing calls to individuals who've stated they don't wish to receive them. Registration with the TPS should stop these calls.

You can register your telephone number with the TPS in the following ways:

  • telephone: by calling the registration line on 0845 070 0707. You will be asked to record the telephone number you wish to register, and leave your name and address so that the registration can be confirmed in writing.
  • fax: you can fax your request, including your name, telephone number and address to 0845 070 0706.
  • writing: you can write, giving your name, telephone number and address to:

    The Telephone Preference Service
    DMA House
    70 Margaret Street
    London W1W 8SS
Registration will take 28 days to take effect.

Similarly, the Fax Preference Service (FPS) makes sure your fax number is no longer available to companies who want to fax you with offers and information.

Although, the government legislation mentioned above also means that it's unlawful to send individuals and sole traders unsolicited marketing promotional faxes without obtaining their prior permission, this legislation does not extend to businesses.
Regardless of the legislation, however, if you're a business, you can still register your fax numbers with the FPS to ensure your fax number is unavailable.

You can register your fax number with the FPS in the following ways:

  • telephone: by calling the registration line on 0845 070 0702. You will be asked to record the fax number you wish to register, and leave your name, together with your company name and address, so that the registration can be confirmed in writing.
  • fax: you can fax your request, including your name and fax number, together with your company name and address, to 0845 070 0705.
  • writing: you can write, giving your name, together with your company name and address, to:

    The Fax Preference Service
    DMA House
    70 Margaret Street
    London W1W 8SS
Registration will take 28 days to take effect.
