Do's and dont's regarding 0871 services

Telephone numbers beginning with 0871 cost anything between five and ten pence per minute from a BT landline.
Calls to 0871 numbers involve a form of micro-payment whereby revenue can be shared between the company you are calling and the third party that's providing the telecoms service.
The 0871 number range is used by a variety of organisations, from interactive ticket booking lines and financial services organisations to holiday booking services.
Ofcom, the communications regulator, has also introduced the 0872 and 0873 number ranges to provide additional capacity for future demand since the 0871 range was approaching exhaustion.
In 2006, Ofcom published its policy statement on Number Translation Services, entitled "NTS - A Way Forward". This set out a number of changes that it has decided to make to the regulation of these numbers. Ofcom stated that it had two particular objectives in doing so:
- To increase the level of consumer protection provided for calls to these numbers;
- To improve pricing transparency for calls to these numbers.
On 5 February 2009, Ofcom announced that PhonepayPlus will take over day-to-day regulation of 0871 numbers on 1 August 2009, when numbers beginning 087 - with the exception of 0870 - will formally be recognised as Premium Rate Services (PRS), putting them under the remit of PhonepayPlus' Code of Practice.
If you are an 087 service provider, you will need to register with PhonepayPlus as a service provider.
