On October 12th, PhonepayPlus supported a one-day MEF event that looked at ‘Mobile payments: Trends, regulations & future opportunities’.
The event kicked off with positive findings from MEF’s latest Business Confidence Index survey. According to the KPMG-conducted survey, the mobile entertainment industry is predicting 33% growth over the next 12 months, and 14% growth in applications revenue.
Next, the regulators had their say: Mark Collins, PhonepayPlus’ Head of Industry Support & Policy, presented on the changing face of premium rate regulation in the UK, before a panel of regulators (including Ofcom, PhonepayPlus, the ASA and the ICO) debated the impact of convergence on regulation and industry.
The morning finished with some global intelligence in the form of a panel discussion between Pat Breen from the Irish premium rate regulator, RegTel, and Burcin Acan from Turkcell, one of Turkey’s biggest mobile operators. Both Pat and Burcin were on-hand to share trends from their respective countries and to take questions.
The afternoon proved to be a look into the future – with leading industry figures sharing their views on how mobile content can be monetised and distributed.
Ilicco Elia from Reuters presented on the different ways that the global company is working to distribute its extensive library of content via mobile networks, before a panel of industry members looked at the options, benefits and considerations for the future of mobile payments.
The final two sessions of the day were panel discussions – the first looking at ‘Smart pipe enablers’ and sharing industry views on new ways that mobile content is being distributed and paid for, and the second discussing the topical business of ‘Application stores’, particularly the implications and opportunities they present for the mobile market.
MEF and PhonepayPlus would like to thank all the speakers and attendees for making the event a success!
